WELCOME TO ELIM
Many people ask “What does the name Elim mean?” It is mentioned in Exodus 15 as an oasis that the people of Israel found in the desert of Sinai. The founding families of Elim in the 19th century were Norwegian immigrants to Marshalltown and found the church an oasis for them in a new and strange land.
Now, in the 21st century, we at Elim strive to make this congregation an oasis of refreshment for anyone and everyone who comes to us, through our worship, education and fellowship but also for our community in a variety of social ministries. We invite you to come, be refreshed, nourished for your spiritual journey and in turn, join us in helping others to receive that same aid and comfort.

ABOUT OUR CHURCH

This year Elim hosted the 2023 Holiday Concert. Below is a little bit about the musicians. We hope you enjoy!
The organist is Hudson Lourenço-Feld, a Brazilian native of São Paulo. He completed his bachelor’s degree in organ performance at The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In 2019, he earned a master’s degree in organ performance at The University of Iowa and moved to Marshalltown. As a professional organist, Hudson serves the First Congregational United Church of Christ of Waterloo and Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls. In Marshalltown, he plays for Trinity Lutheran Church. Hudson is also the Resident Artist at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he plays solo concerts along with mixed ensembles featuring guest artists from the community.
The pianist is Josh Grimes of Marshalltown. Josh has been playing some type of keyboard since the age of three. He is quite proficient on piano, organ and the accordion. His talents are now regularly displayed with his musical family (The Seymours) who are a popular gospel music group in this area. Josh also plays regularly at Elim Lutheran Church and for special occasions.
Handbell players from several Marshalltown churches have come together to create a ‘community’ handbell choir for this concert. Those participating are Todd Metge from Trinity Lutheran; Vickie Unferth from First Presbyterian; Cathy Underwood and Pat Kirner from St Francis Parish/St Henry’s Church; Krystal Randall, Gary Heggen, Lynn Maas and Jody Brintnall from First Congregational; and Deb Allen, Brenda Ellefson, Mark Proescholdt, Ann Pfantz and Larry Pfantz from Elim Lutheran. The choir has been able to mold a variety of experiences and techniques into a cohesive handbell ensemble.
